Unique Earrings made with authentic Damascene ceramics with hand made caligraphy made by ‘ishani’ master in Damascus ( شيخ كار). We used typical Damascene words to popularize this craft as it was traditionally made only with religious words. During the heavy bombardments in Damascus suburbs most workshops and factories were destroyed and the shortage of electricity that resulted from war did not allow the Ishani ceramics to cure enough to harden and so this ancient traditional craft was dying. Ishani is so important to Syrian culture that losing it would mean the continued erosion and loss of Syrian tradition and identity, moreover it’s preservation helps provide peace that is essential when there’s a divide between people that resulted from war. So we made this series to draw attention to the fact that not only is the loss of life a tragedy and source of divide but also the continuous depletion of cultural heritage is also a crime and that by preserving it we can achieve peace.
